Fiber optic cable transmits data as pulses of light through strands of glass or plastic. It offers superior speed, much greater distances (kilometers), and complete immunity to interference. With enormous bandwidth potential, it is the backbone of data centers, long-distance networks, and high-speed internet. The main disadvantages are its higher cost and the need for more specialized installation.
