The 250 µm fibers are placed in a loose, high-modulus plastic tube. The tubes are filled with a waterproof filler compound.

A steel wire, sometimes coated with polyethylene (PE) for high-fiber-count cables, is placed in the center of the core as the metallic strength member. The tubes (and fillers) are twisted around the strength member, forming a compact, circular cable core.
