What is outdoor fiber optic cable?

Outdoor optical cable, simply called outdoor-grade cable, is a type of optical cable. It's called outdoor optical cable because it's specifically designed for outdoor use. It's durable, able to withstand wind, sun, cold, and frost, and has a thick outer casing. It also possesses mechanical and environmental characteristics such as pressure resistance, corrosion resistance, and tensile strength.

Commonly used outdoor optical cables are divided into two structures: central tube type and twisted-type optical cable.

① Center tube type optical cable: The center of the optical cable is a loose tube, and the reinforcing member is located around the loose tube. For example, the common GYXTW type optical cable has a small number of cores, usually less than 12 cores.

GYXTW Optical Cable:
Beam tube: The beam tube material is PBT, which is hard, flexible, and resistant to lateral pressure.

Because there are only 12 colors of optical fiber, the national standard (also international standard) center-beam tube optical cable can only have a maximum of 12 cores. Optical cables with more than 12 cores are usually twisted.

2. Twisted Optical Cable: Several bundles of optical fibers are twisted together around the core's strength element. These optical cables, such as GYTS, GYTA, etc., can be combined with loose tubes to create larger cores. Number of optical fibers.

Fiber optic cables with 60 cores or fewer typically use a 5-tube structure. For example, a 60-core fiber optic cable uses 5 bundles of tubes, and each bundle contains 12 optical fibers. Generally, twisted-pair fiber optic cables with 12 cores or fewer are twisted together with a bundle of tubes containing 12 optical fiber cores and 4 solid filler wires. They can also be twisted with 2 bundles of 6 cores and 3 filler wires, or combined in other ways.

GYTS Optical Cable: Among twisted optical cables, this type and GYTA are the most common. Several bundles of tubes are twisted together onto a thicker, phosphated steel wire. The gaps in the twisted wires are filled with water-blocking cable paste, and the sheath is tightened into an outer wrapper after a circle of steel tape.

GYTA Optical Cable: The structure of this optical cable is the same as GYTS, except that the steel strip is replaced with an aluminum strip. The lateral stress index of the aluminum strip is not as high as that of the steel strip, but the aluminum strip has better antioxidant and moisture resistance. In some environments with through-conduits, using the GYTA model results in a longer lifespan for the optical cable.

GYFTY type optical cable: This type of optical cable consists of several bundled tubes twisted around a non-metallic reinforced core. The twisted space is filled with cable paste or protected with a water-blocking tape, and the sheath is pressed directly onto the outside without armor. This model has many variations. It is used in some aerial applications. To increase the tensile strength of the optical cable, some aramid fiber and an extruded sheath are added outside the twisted cable core. If the central reinforcement is not a non-metallic reinforced (FRP) core but steel wire, the model is GYTY, F (which stands for non-metallic).

Type 53 fiber optic cable: We see some models like GYTA53 and GYTY53. This model adds a layer of steel armor and sheath to the GYTA and GYTY fiber optic cables. It is used in environments with relatively harsh conditions. The "53" indicates an extra layer of armor and sheath.
