    ADSS is a type of fiber optic cable that contains no conductive metal elements. It is used by electric utility companies as a communication medium, installed along existing overhead transmission lines and often sharing the same support structures as electrical conductors.

    ADSS is an alternative to OPGW with lower installation costs. The cables are designed to be strong enough to allow installations of up to 700 meters between support towers.

    The ADSS cable is designed to be lightweight and of small diameter to reduce the load on tower structures due to the weight of the cable, wind, and ice.

    In the cable design, the internal glass optical fibers are supported without tension to maintain low optical loss throughout the cable's lifespan. The cable is sheathed to prevent moisture from degrading the fibers. The sheath also protects the polymer strength elements from the effects of ultraviolet sunlight.

    Using single-mode fibers and light wavelengths of 1310 or 1530 nanometers, circuits up to 100 km long are possible without repeaters. A single cable can carry up to 144 fibers.
